An elevator (or lift in British English) is a vertical transport equipment that efficiently moves people or goods between floors (levels, decks) of a building, vessel or other structure. Elevators are generally powered by electric motors that either drive traction cables and counterweight systems like a hoist, or pump hydraulic fluid to raise a cylindrical piston like a jack.
Most people don’t realise just how influential and revolutionary lifts have been for the way we live our lives in the modern world. Without their invention, we wouldn’t have been able to have the kind of high-rise, city in the sky living which we now associate with cities all around the globe. It is this lift that has allowed people to build some of the tallest buildings that mankind has seen.
